Union Betterment
Association met on March 29,2010 at 7:00 P.M. in the Heart of Iowa
Conference room. Present were: Lezlie Reel, Candy Wait, Jo Bates,
Troy Wilson, Cindy Clemons, and Roger and Linda Crawford.
President Lezlie
opened this meeting by reading the Union Betterment Association
mission statement.
The February
meeting minutes were looked over and Jo made the motion to accept
the minutes as written. Cindy seconded. Carried.
Treasurer's
report: Lezlie reported that the checking account balance was
$7,043.80, (2) two Certificates of Deposit for $5,758.77 and
$2,859.12 given to the Union Betterment Association from Trees
Forever. Troy made a motion to accept the Treasurer's report. Cindy
seconded. Carried.
Town clean up is
Saturday April 24,2010 starting at the City park at 8:00 A.M. The
City is also having a Hazardous Material clean up from 9:00 A.M. to
Noon.
The Citywide
garage sale is May2010. Deanna Vaux does the advirsting. Lezle will
print maps. ~"~~-_.
Tar Heel Days
2010: Lezlie went to the City Council meeting to see if they will
pay for (1/2) half of the Fireworks for Saturday evening. The City
will pay for (1/2 ) half the cost of the Fireworks with the Union
Betterment Association paying for the other (1/2) half of the cost.
Dan Hauser will light the Fireworks.
If anyone wants
to add information for Tar Heel events they should contact
Lezlie. She will
put together a list of events in the Fun Guide.
There will be no
meeting in April.
The next meeting
will be May 24,2010. Meeting adjourned at 7:30 P.M.

Heart of Iowa
Conference room was the meeting place for the Union Betterment
Association on July 27,2009 at 7:00 P.M. Present were: Lezlie Reel,
Kathi Patten, Candy Wait, Jo and Lloyd Bates, Donna Lawler, Heather
Lawler, and Cindy Clemons. President Lezlie called the meeting to
order. The June meeting minutes were looked over, Kathi made a
motion to accept the minutes as printed. Donna seconded. Carried.
No Treasurer's
report was given.
Lezlie has
talked to Brent Rogers about the brickwork for the new town signs;
he will give an estimate on this project.
Lezlie will order 3 new Welcome flags, due to the others are
in bad shape. Lezlie is getting a new sign made for Tar Heel with
the names of all the sponsor's of Tar Heel events, this will cost
$125.00.
The Union
Betterment Association is having a float in the Tar Heel parade.
Heather is
making a sign to show where the Tar Heel 2009 profits are going and
she will get a hayrack to use.· Lloyd is getting a tractor to pull
the float. We will decorate the float by the Vet's office Wednesday
evening.
Lezlie ran down
the list of events for Tar Heel 2009, everything was under control
for all the events.

Union
Betterment Association met at the Heart of Iowa Conference room on
June 22, 2009 at 7:00 P.M. Present were:
Lezlie Reel, Jo and Lloyd Bates, Candy Wait, Mary Harding, Cindy
Clemons, and Genya Clemons. President
Lezlie opened the
meeting by reading the Union Betterment Association mission
statement. The previous meetings minutes were looked over and a
motion to accept the minutes as written was made by Lloyd. Mary
seconded. Carried.
Treasurer's report:
Lezlie passed out copies. The checking account balance is $7,142.50.
Two Certificates of Deposit are $5,669.07 and $2,859.12. Jo made a
motion to accept the Treasurer's report. Mary seconded. Carried.
Union Betterment Association received a $100.00 donation from
Alliant Energy to help with electricity cost at Tar Heel Days.
Discussion was held on
Town of Union welcome signs. Nagle Signs from Marshalltown is
working on a design, no price quote yet. They only make the sign
they do not do brick and concrete work to install signs.
The Union Supper Club is
opening on July 7,2009. The Union Betterment Association is getting
a planter for outside for their Grand Opening. Genya is checking
into prices for this and a rose bush for Eva Morgart.
Cindy Clemons reported
for Union Fire Department on the new Siren project. There is
$8,000.00 raised and a grant to come from Alliant Energy of
$1,500.00. Planning a fundraiser golf tournament and supper at South
Hardin Recreation Center.
The Tar Heel raffle will
be for membership at the South Hardin Recreation Center for golfing,
a gift certificate at ST. Meats, the GingerSnap, Union Auto, and the
Union Supper Club. Discussion was held on
candidate for Grand Marshall for 2009 Tar
Heel parade. James and Sharon Johnson will be asked to serve. David
Schmidt will be asked for 2010 Tar Heel parade. Lezlie will ask Jim
and Sharon.
Johnny Orr,
retired coach from Iowa State, is
making appearances in parades in the area. We will ask him to
announce the Outhouse Races.
Lezlie will contact AAA
Porta Potty for two units here on Friday thru Sunday during Tar Heel
Days. The cost will be about $225.00.
Discussion was held on
Tar Heei vendors, they will give 50% of
their profits back to park project, and no
charge fee was decided. A charge of $15.00 will be asked if they use
electricity.
Lezlie will get forms
printed for Little Miss and Little Mr. Union-Whitten.
Kids have to be ages 5-10 years old
and a B.C.L.U.W. student. Lezlie will get crowns for this contest.
Discussion was held on
places to put Tar Heel 2009 profits. Will be
split 5 ways evenly between the Library, the City Pool, the South
Hardin Recreation Area, new Playground, and the Siren project.
Lezlie asked about Tar
Heel float in parade showing where profit from Tar Heel 2009 will be
used. Lloyd volunteered a hayrack and
tractor.

Union Betterment Association met on
May 27, 2009 in the Heart of Iowa North
room at 7:00 P.M. Present were Lezlie Reel, Candy Wait, Jo and Lloyd
Bates, Donna Lawler, Lori Ingelbritsen, Cindy Clemons, Genya
Clemons, Mary Harding, and Heather King. President Lezlie opened the
meeting by reading the Union Betterment Association mission
statement.
The previous meeting's minutes were
looked over and a motion by Donna to accept the minutes as written
was made. Heather seconded. Carried.
Lezlie presented the Treasurer's
report copies were passed out. The garage sale profited $76.99 with
resident sales to collect and the bill from the Eldora paper yet to
pay. Heart of Iowa is still collecting pop cans for proceeds to
Union Betterment Association. Checking account balance is $7,142.50
with (2) Certificate of Deposits of $5,669.07 and $2,795.07. Jo
motioned to accept Treasurer's report. Lori seconded. Carried.
Lezlie read a thank you from the
family of Wayne Morgart for flowers sent to him in the hospital. The
Union Betterment Association is getting a rose bush to be planted at
his home as a memorial gift. Wayne was a faithful Union Betterment
Association member for many years.
Lezlie sent a thank you to Rat Hole
Rentals for providing lunch for town clean up day on April 25,2009.
The Brick Bungalow in Wellsburg makes
a water tower prism decoration as a remembrance to towns that have
replaced their water towers. Lezlie will check on prices and have
more information for the next meeting.
Lezlie has checked town signs at
Reinbeck and Wellsburg. Plans are for 2 new signs on the East and
West entrances to Union. Lori volunteered Mark to repaint and repair
if necessary the 2 wooden signs on North and South entrances to
town.
Lezlie stated that the Union Supper
Club is reopening again. Penny , the new owner asked if the Union
Betterment Association could offer any help. Discussion was held and
decided to do a ribbon cutting ceremony with newspaper coverage and
getting an outside planter with flowers to be put in front of their
new business.
Tar Heel Days 2009 dates are July
31,2009, August 1,2009 and August 2,2009. Lezlie will do posters to
be put up around town now for the date changes. Lori said that Dave
Gunderson will rock his lot across from the Union Community Church
and the Tar Heel vendors can set up there. We have 5 vendors so far.
Lori's husband Mark may do a putting for prizes golf game. He will
provide the prizes. Lori and Mark are having Bingo with the proceeds
being donated for new park benches. They can hold Bingo games at the
Fire Station beginning after the Parade on Saturday. Donna received
a call from Raymond Rayes from Bangor. He will have horses or ponies
in the Tar Heel Parade and will give to kids after the parade.
The Playground Committee showed a
poster of the new layout and playground equipment when project is
completed. The Playground fund has raised $15,000; this includes a
$3,000 grant.
Cindy Clemons reported on a Race for
the Siren Day to be held June 27,2009. A meal will be served along
with various other events to be held. The siren donation total to
date is $7,000 and growing. Hardin County Savings Bank will give
prizes for the race day.
Lezlie adjourned the meeting at 8:10

Union Betterment Association met on
April 27,2009 at 7:00 P.M. in the Heart of Iowa Conference room.
Present were Lezlie Reel, Kathi Patten, Candy Wait, Donna Lawler,
Lloyd and Jo Bates, and Cindy Clemons.
President Lezlie called this meeting
to order by reading the Union Betterment Association mission
statement. The minutes of the previous meeting were looked over.
Kathi made a motion to accept the minutes as printed. Jo seconded.
Carried.
Lezlie passed around the Treasurer's
report. There were no changes in the income or expenses. The
Checking account balance is $6,960.51. The Certificate of Deposit
for $2,795.07 is up to be renewed in May. Lezlie will renew this for
a 3-month period. Lezlie has a bill for paper and advertising for
garage sale day. Donna made a motion to accept the Treasurer's
report as printed. Kathi seconded. Carried.
Spring clean up was April 25,2009. It
rained but the guys got the stuff picked up around town. Curt and
Cheryl Halverson fixed the noon meal for all the helpers. Lezlie
will send a thank you. Next year was decided each person would
contact Knight Sanitation for appliance pick up and payment.
City wide garage sale is May 9,2009
starting at 8:00 A.M. until 12:00 P.M.
Goodwill will come to pick up left
over items from sales at the City Hall in the middle room. Items
have to be bagged or boxed. A $7.50 charge is for the advertising of
the garage sales.
Lezlie is still looking into designs
for the Union town signs. She is checking into the Wellsburg town
sign.
Tar Heel auction will be getting
sponsors to donate money or items.
Names will be listed on a sign like
last year and will be displayed at Tar Heel Days. Jim Johnson will
help Lloyd get items for auction.
Next meeting is Monday May 18,2009 at

March 23, 2009
Union Betterment Association met on March 23,2009 at 7:00 P.M. in
the Heart of Iowa Conference room. Present were: Lezlie Reel, Cindy
Clemons, Candy Wait, Kathi Patten, Heather King, Lloyd and Jo Bates.
President Lezlie called the meeting
to order by reading the Union Betterment Association mission
statement.
Minutes of the previous meeting were
looked over. Kathi made a motion to accept them as printed. Heather
seconded. Carried.
Lezlie passed out the Treasurer's
report. There was no activity for the month. The checking account
balance was the same $6,960.51,2 Certificates of Deposit were
$5,554.81 and $2,795.07. The $5,554.81 Certificate of Deposit will
be renewed for another 9-month period or for the best interest rate
at the Hardin County Saving Bank. Lezlie will take care of this.
Lloyd made a motion to accept the Treasurer's report. Kathi
seconded. Carried.
Cindy Clemons spoke from the Union
Fire Department on the Department trying to purchase a new siren for
the City. The cost is $15,000.00. She has applied for grants and the
Department is having a Garage Sale on May 9,2009 to help with the
cost. Dave Gunderson will donate the time and effort in putting the
siren into the air. The siren has to be working by a deadline in
September. The Union Betterment Association will be happy to work
with the Fire Department on this project. Jo will put this
information on the Union Web site.
Lezlie researched town signs for area
towns. She is looking at brick and concrete for a permanent design.
She will check on prices for the next meeting. Union Betterment
Association plans on putting 4 new town signs in Union depending on
the price.
Tar Heel 2009 dates are Friday July
31st,
Saturday August 1st,
and Sunday August 2nd.
Heather will do a new foot
poster to put up soon to note the changes in dates. Heather is also
checking into a Rodeo for Tar Heel. This will be a very expensive
event and require a lot of manpower. It maybe to late of date to put
needed time in this year. She will keep working on this project for
Tar Heel 2010. Lezlie has the Tar Heel 2009 schedule on the Web
site.
Saturday April 25,2009 at 8:00 A.M.
is Citywide Spring clean up. Lezlie will contact Knight Sanitation
for their help picking up.
May 9,2009 is Citywide Garage sales.
Sharon Johnson, Deanna Vaux, and Lezlie will work on this. Goodwill
truck will pick up left over items this
year.

Union Betterment Association met on Monday February 23,2009 at 7:00
P.M. in the Heart of Iowa Conference room. Present were: Roger and
Linda Crawford, Lezlie Reel, Candy Wait, Donna Lawler, and Heather
King. President Lezlie called the meeting to order by reading the
Union Betterment Association mission statement.
Everyone looked over copies of the
previous meeting's minutes. Donna made a motion to accept the
minutes as printed. Heather seconded. Carried.
Lezlie had copies of the Treasurer's
report for each person to review. The Soup Cook off Saturday
February 21,2009 was discussed. Lezlie bought the mini cups used to
serve the soup in, also dessert plates, soup bowls, spoons, and
several ladles were purchased. Napkins and cups were donated by the
Hardin County Savings Bank. A small crowd attended. 8 different soup
entries were used. E-Mail to help advertise next year's event. Also
send out postcards for personal invitations. Was suggested to lower
the price of the meal or go to freewill donation. A sign was
suggested to tell the public what the money would be used for in the
community. In case of a tie the prize money will be split. The
checking account balance is $6,960.51 with (2) Certificates of
Deposit, $5,554.81 and $2,795.07. Roger made a motion to accept
Treasurer's report with a second from Linda. Carried.
Lezlie still researching Town sign
designs. Will have some samples for next meeting.

Tar Heel weekend dates are July 31st thru August 2,2009.
Need to get dates out to public due to the change of weekends. The
Calvary Baptist Church will serve the breakfast on Sunday morning.
The South Hardin Recreation Center is checking into Saturday night
entertainment. The tram was a good idea to shuttle people around.
Town clean-up date is Saturday April
25,2009. Garage sale day will be Saturday May 9,2009.
The next meeting will be March
23,2009 at 7:00 P.M. Meeting was adjourned at
7:48 P.M.

2008
Union Betterment Association met on November 24,2008 at 7:00
P.M. in the Heart of Iowa Conference Room. Present were: Roger
and Linda Crawford, Lezlie Reel, Candy Wait, and Kara Backoff.
Lezlie opened the meeting. The Minutes were looked over; Roger
made a motion to accept these minutes as printed. Linda
seconded. Carried.
Treasurer's report: Lezlie will
renew the Trees Forever Certificate of Deposit for $2,795.07 for
six months. The Checking account balance is $7,291.15.
Pumpkin Fest was a success for
the first year. A profit of $135.00 with a bill from the Ginger
Snap yet to pay. There were 9 pies entered for the contest. Next
year may need to have (2) two categories for pumpkin carving and
painting contest. Had 1 flowered arrangement pumpkin for the
contest also. Kathi Patten and Kara Backoff were in charge of
kids games which lasted one-half (1/2) hour. Next year kids
should come in costume. The Cemetery Theater went great. The
hayride out there was full. Sharon Johnson spoke on the Norman
family history at the Union Cemetery. Suggested that pumpkin
seeds be handed out to the kids at the February soup supper. The
meal for Pumpkin Fest served 50 people. The judged pies were
served for dessert. Great treat for all.
Holiday Business Open House is on
Friday December 12,2008. Santa will be at the Hardin County
Savings Bank in Union from 5 to 6 P.M. Lezlie will sack 50 treat
bags and give Santa dollars to all the kids. Heather will get
judges for the town lighting contest. 1st,
2nd,
and 3rd place
money prizes to be given.
Lezlie read thank you letters
from the Union Library and the City of Union for the Union
Betterment Association donations from 2008 Tar Heel week end.
THE Union Betterment Association
is sending flowers to Chuck Lawler in Ames Hospital. Lezlie will
take care of this.
